Trying to ease the pain of Rheumatism
WITH ABOUT 35,000 Cypriot citizens, or five in 100, suffering from rheumatism, the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the local Cyprus branch are urging the government to invest in special clinics and more specialists and rehabilitation centres in the field of rheumatology.
Rheumatism, commonly referred to as arthritis, is a general term for acute and chronic conditions characterised by inflammation, soreness and stiffness of muscles, and joint pain. In severe cases the medical problems can affect internal organs like the heart, lungs and kidneys and may even lead to death. More than 100 million Europeans suffer in some way from rheumatic diseases.
The Eighth International Conference Against Rheumatism opened yesterday in Nicosia with a press event. The three-day conference brings together national societies of rheumatology and patients organisations with the aim of raising public awareness on the ailment and of increasing the research facilities, treatment, and access to therapy.
